It’s going to be a hot one in Las Vegas at LIGHTFAIR 2012, and I’m not talking about the weather! LUXIM has doubled the light output from LEP light sources with the STA-75-01 replacing 750W HID with 60% energy savings.

We will also be showcasing luminaires from dozens of global Tier 1 OEM’s. In addition, we have installations in Las Vegas that we will be showing people including those at the Las Vegas Convention Center, World Famous Piero’s Restaurant, and the Monte Carlo Hotel and Casino.

Plasma Planet has just learned of an interesting application for LEP lighting in the Mid-Western United States.

The problem has been vandalism and interference on electrical grid infrastructure, especially those out of the way units where surveillance can be more challenging. The combination of ‘white light’ for better surveillance and ‘long life’ for low maintenance made LEP ideal for this application. The installation was completed by Straylight Optical Technologies and is the first of many such installations planned in the region.

With this new application, Plasma Planet realizes that ‘LEP saves electrical energy’ can now have two very distinct meanings.

Dentistry Microscope Launched using Plasma Lighting

Seiler, a leader in precision microscopy, launched a dentistry microscope using LUXIM’s plasma light source that is 3x the brighter and much lower power consumption than LED and halogen alternatives. See the youtube video demonstration to see the dramatic difference in color rendering between the plasma system and the older metal halide system. We are very pleased to offer a better, more colorful, longer life and brighter light source for modern dentistry equipment.

San Francisco’s Aquarium of the Bay (@AquariumOTheBay) uses LEP sources to highlight their aquariums and sea life. Plasma light sources penetrates water and provides a natural look much better than compared to fluorescent and metal halide alternatives. In addition, LEP aquarium fixtures can be designed to provide adjustable color temperature for different plant life and penetration depths. Thank you SF Aquarium of the Bay.

Should Lighting Executives go to Prison?

Plasma Planet has learned of another exciting, if somewhat intimidating LEP installation. In this case, LEP is being used to improve perimeter fence lighting at a Correctional Facility.

The installation was done by Straylight Optical Technologies using their Tesla II luminaire equipped with an LEP-STA-4101 from LUXIM. Once again, the incumbent technology was 400W HPS drawing 460 Watts from the grid. The LEP solution provided:
- 40% energy savings (280Watts Versus 460Watts)
- Improved color rendering (>70 CRI Versus 25 CRI) and
- Improved optical control and light distribution along the fence.

These benefits strengthen security and enhance safety at the facility while helping the environment at the same time.

While Occupy Wall Street is raging, the above installation causes Plasma Planet to ponder the question “Should lighting executives go to prison?” And if so, whom?

IES Recognized LUXIMs STA 75 at 2011 IES Annual Conference

It was a real honor last week to see LUXIM recognized by the IES for the second year in a row. Below is the mission statement of the IES Progress Committee:

“The Committee’s mission is to keep in touch with developments in the art and science of lighting throughout the world and prepare a yearly report of achievements for the Society. Acceptance in the Progress Report is based on an impartial judging process used by the committee to evaluate each submission on its uniqueness, innovation and significance to the lighting industry.”

Four ways LEP saves Money in a Steel Mill!!

We have just finished an installation in the loading area of a steel mill. The installation saves the mill money in four ways:
- Lower energy costs: The energy efficient LEP light source reduces the lighting energy bill by 40%.
- Lower maintenance costs: The 50,000 hour life reduces maintenance (Important when units are 50 feet up).
- Higher equipment utilization: Longer lamp life means less disruption associated with repair AND
- Higher worker productivity: Due to the full sunlight spectrum and high scotopic lumens.

This installation is the first part of a broader adoption of LEP throughout the steel mill

From Russia with Light

Plasma Planet has learned of a new LEP installation in Sochi, Russia. The area lighting installation was used to showcase plasma technology at a recent tradeshow attended by key decision makers from throughout Russia.

The installation replaced High Pressure Sodium with Light Emitting Plasma LEP-STA4101 units from LUXIM. The LEP units deliver an energy saving of 180 Watts/fixture while improving color quality and nighttime visibility (see photo).

Plasma Planet expects to see more LEP activity in Russia moving forward. So watch this space
